September 24, 2004: the Rodeo, DeKalb, IL
So, don't ask me how it happened. I pride myself in remembering
just about everything. But how we ended up in Plano, IL, I could
never tell you. Clearly, it had something to do with Ryan
Q. Beyond that is anybody's guess.
I
think our hope was that we would stay at his house after the show at
the Beat Kitchen. And we were close! We, in reality, ended
up
sleeping outside in our vehicles this night. Paul and Joey in
Paul's
mom's minivan while Matt and Sam were in Matt's Celica. A
genuinely
new experience for all of us, I believe, at the time, but it would, by
no means, be the last. You'll see!
We all woke up earlier
than we probably would have liked to the sweat and misery-inducing sun
and decided to move on to the next city--DeKalb! So, after
hitting a
gas station for a bit of fuel and a mini-doughnut and coffee breakfast,
we were on our way.
It was not our first trip to DeKalb. We had played
there once before the previous Spring. No one would have guessed,
however.
Have you ever spent all day hanging around downtown
DeKalb? We have. I remember walking around a bit, hitting a
music
shop, a thrift/flea market type deal, a convenience outlet, and a
'bookstore'...ate PB and J's with BBQ chips...but how we managed to
kill 10 hours or so, I cannot recall. But we did.
Something about not being able to find the place...finding the place
and hearing 'A Ghost is Born'...loving the feedback! ...
I
distinctly remember being caught off guard by the Autumn Waking and
being mystified by Things Falling Apart--about whom I said something
very particular, and nobody seems to forget it, but I am not going to
tell you what it was. ...Oh! and going crazy for the first
time on
the end of Ruby (a song we haven't played since the next show).
PBJ and BBQ chips, though...try it!
Set
possibly included: Summer, Crow/Love/Sunday Breakfast, Dream On(?), I
Miss You, fiftyeight, Ruby, The Way (I'm Supposed to Be)
