One of the great challenges faced by, what I would assume to be, all musicians is how to balance school and/or work with the music. For instance, say you have a band. Half of this band lives in the city while the other half lives in a small town an hour away. One members of the band books a show in another city five hours away on a friday. Naturally, if all of the members of the band served only one master--the band--it would be no problem at all. Unfortunately, one of these members--living in the city--is still in college and has a class that doesn't get out until after 5:00. How do you get everyone to the show on time?
Well, this is how Berry worked it out. Joey and Paul loaded up Paul's mom's mimivan with all of the equipment and left for the show (in Chicago) at a reasonable time. Sam and Matt left St. Louis as soon as possible (Matt took Sam to class with him in his car) and if every thing went smoothly, which at rush hour was next to impossible, the whole band could have met up in Chicago just in time to play the show.
Clever as they were, taking the exit at 20th and Chestnut and crossing the river via the MLK, it was just unavoidable. Rush hour was destined to fuck Matt and Sam. Not even driving in excess of 80 mph all the way from St. Louis to Chicago was able remedy the situation.
Then, to make things worse, Paul gave Matt directions that were next to impossible to decipher. Needless to say, there was much cursing.
Finally, Matt and Sam walk into the Beat Kitchen only to see Joey and Paul on stage playing by themselves. Matt gets up on stage and immediately starts to set up his keyboard. But, wait a second. Why isn't Sam setting up? Well, as it turns out, after all that had happened, Sam forgot to bring his bass! I mean, seriously, how do you forget your own instrument?
Sam borrowed a bass from one of the other bands (probably either Autumn Waking or Things Falling Apart) and we, all together at last!, played one or two songs (probably fifty-eight and Death) and that was it.
Oh, and Jen was under age and couldn't get in. So, the only person who might have come to see us wasn't there.
We still have yet to play the Beat Kitchen again.
Headache!
